### *300 Years of the ‘Rival Queens’: Handel’s 1726 Opera Season*

Jun 30 – Oct 25, 2026 · on view

A small display on Handel’s operas Alessandro and Scipione and the rival sopranos Cuzzoni and Faustina.

Marking 300 years since Handel’s 1726 London season, the display looks at the operas Alessandro and Scipione, written to give two star sopranos equal billing. Francesca Cuzzoni was London’s established prima donna when Faustina Bordoni arrived from Italy; fans fuelled a rivalry, though the singers worked well together.

It also touches on the castrato Senesino, for whom Handel wrote many lead roles. It is shown in the Handel Gallery on the museum’s top floor.

### *Where We Grow: nature, nurture & childhood*

Group exhibition · Nov 17, 2026 – Apr 18, 2027 · coming up

Joy Gregory, Andy Holden, Jade de Montserrat, Mark Neville, Quentin Blake and others

Contemporary art, photography and historic objects on children’s relationship with nature, gardens and play.

The show links the Foundling Hospital’s 18th-century landscape to the gardens, playgrounds and green spaces that shape children’s lives now, and asks what happens when access to nature is unequal. Histories of childhood sit beside the views of young people today.

Archival material and historic objects, including 18th-century seed lists and the botanical motifs of the Court Room Gallery, are shown with works by Joy Gregory, Andy Holden, Jade de Montserrat, Mark Neville, Quentin Blake, Larry Achiampong and David Blandy.
