The museum’s annual survey gathers thirteen artists whose recent work impressed the curators, offering a snapshot of current directions in contemporary art in Southern California. The title recalls the baker’s dozen of medieval England, when an extra loaf guarded against penalties for underweight bread. The curators use it to acknowledge their own biases while focusing on art rooted in the present. Participants include Sining Zhu, Mark Dean Veca, Heidi Schwegler and Renee Pepion. B-LA-M is a three-year exchange among artist-run gallery networks in Berlin, Los Angeles and Mexico City. It began in Berlin in 2024 with 54 galleries, moved to Mexico City in 2025, and now reaches Los Angeles. This presentation features artists from UOOORS, the Venice Institute of Contemporary Art and Die Möglichkeit einer Insel. In the dark room, ViCA screens more than twenty new films by artists from around the world. B-LA-M is also staged at galleries across Los Angeles from October 28 to November 4. Carey arranges lines in varied sequences that trick the eye into seeing dimension: on a flat surface they can read as three-dimensional, and lines running from floor to wall to ceiling can seem to hang in mid-air from different vantage points. He calls this approach Dimensionalization. The hallway piece follows his earlier site-specific installations Dimensionalization (2018–2019) and Coalescence (2019–2024). Carey, born in Curaçao and based in Los Angeles, works in line drawing and optical tape. The second part of an exchange between the Møre and Romsdal Art Center in Molde, Norway, and the Torrance Art Museum, curated by TAM with Jet Pascua. Artists from both sides of the world work in painting, abstraction, gesture and figuration, as well as performative mark-making. The show looks at how marks and forms carry personal, cultural and aesthetic histories, and how remembered experience is inscribed onto surfaces, spaces and bodies.
