## Exhibitions

### Doyle Lane: *Master of Clay*

Sep 13, 2026 – Mar 1, 2027 · on view · Virginia Steele Scott Galleries of American Art

The first major museum retrospective of Doyle Lane, the Los Angeles ceramic artist, from small glazed vessels to architectural murals.

More than 100 works from the 1950s to the 1980s, with archival documents, follow Lane (1923–2002) from functional pottery to large tile murals made for modernist buildings. The show places him in midcentury California modernism and the Southern California studio ceramics movement, and looks at the barriers he faced as a Black artist. His 1964 Mutual Savings and Loan mural, 4,876 individually glazed tiles in a 17-by-8-foot installation, is also on view.

### Laura Aguilar: *Day of the Dead*

Sep 20, 2026 – Mar 1, 2027 · on view · Virginia Steele Scott Galleries of American Art

Laura Aguilar’s photographs of Día de los Muertos in Los Angeles from 1984 to 1992, recently acquired from her estate.

The gelatin silver prints range from street celebrations to scenes staged inside homes, and portray friends and fellow artists such as Harry Gamboa Jr., Barbara Carrasco and Ricardo Valverde. Aguilar (1959–2018), raised in the San Gabriel Valley, photographed Chicana and queer communities in Los Angeles from the 1980s on. An ofrenda in her honor, designed by the estate’s co-trustees Sybil Venegas and Christopher Velasco, anchors the room.

Butler, Guthrie’s 1936 guitar inscribed “This Machine Kills Fascists,” and work by Cara Romero, William Camargo, Noni Olabisi and Mary Lee Bendolph. Josh Garrett-Davis and Linde B. Lehtinen curate.

### Edmund de Waal: *the eight directions of the wind: Edmund de Waal at The Huntington*

Oct 18, 2025 – Oct 26, 2026 · on view · Huntington Art Gallery, Chinese Garden and Japanese Garden

Installations by the British artist and writer Edmund de Waal in three places: the Huntington Art Gallery, the Chinese Garden and the Japanese Garden.

In the Art Gallery’s small library, de Waal has gathered poetry of exile into a table topped with porcelain slip and gold; in the dining room are 18th-century Meissen plates looted by the Nazis, broken in the bombing of Dresden and mended with kintsugi. In the Chinese Garden he traces a thousand years of porcelain, setting shards and vessels beside his own, and in the Japanese Garden a charred-oak pavilion looks onto his black porcelain in the Marsh Tea House.

### Sandy Rodriguez: *Book 13*

Mar 22, 2026 – Apr 26, 2027 · on view · Virginia Steele Scott Galleries of American Art

Sandy Rodriguez’s largest installation yet: a 20-foot map of the United States, plant portraits, a book and a landscape, all on handmade amate paper.

The Los Angeles Chicana artist and researcher made every piece on hand-processed amate-fiber paper, setting colonial Mexican sources against nineteenth-century maps and boundary surveys from the Huntington’s collections. The work looks at how borders and histories in the region are drawn, erased and redrawn, and at the communities official accounts leave out.
