Kandy, founded in 1469, stayed independent until Britain annexed it in 1815. Its artisans worked under royal patronage, mixing local forms with South Indian design and Buddhist and Hindu imagery, shaped by marriages with South Indian royals, trade with the Dutch and ties with Thai Buddhist monks. Many of the objects are portable and set with gems; among them is an 18th-century ivory Buddha. Organized by assistant curator Lakshika Senarath Gamage. The nearly life-size canvas (about 1867–68) shows the 1867 firing-squad execution of Maximilian, the Austrian archduke made emperor of Mexico, with his generals Tomás Mejía and Miguel Miramón; the painting now survives only in pieces. Documents and images lent by the Getty Research Institute trace the French occupation of Mexico in the 1860s and the circulation of pictures of Maximilian and his generals after their deaths.
