Kuldeep SinghNeither Sun nor Moon
Nine new paintings of contemporary men in quiet, intimate moments, drawing on South Asian poetry and painting.
Singh recasts the longing heroine of classical Indian poetry and painting, the nayika, as portraits of men, many of them friends and lovers, shown at rest or in private thought. The scenes range from large domestic interiors to small portraits, informed by the raagmala tradition, Odissi dance and Indian classical music.
He paints into dampened canvas with quick, layered dabs and smears, so figures shift between definition and abstraction. This is his first show with the gallery.
