Arranged as five series and two single works, the paintings each borrow a shape, structure or figure from another and alter it, so forms evolve across the room. The title painting shows empty sleeves and pant legs standing upright with no limbs inside; Magician’s Assistant spreads a four-legged figure on a staircase across two door-sized canvases. Mullen sketches nothing in advance and starts from abstraction, drawing on Merleau-Ponty’s ideas about perception and the body. The title names land Gibson owns on the Mexican border in San Diego County, and one of the thirteen bands of the Kumeyaay; granite boulders in the pictures recall the stone mortars they used to grind acorns and seeds. Made partly through automatic drawing, the scenes also reflect his new fatherhood, with a recurring desert dove, his daughter’s namesake, and an artist’s palette that turns into a head, a rock or an object held up to the sky. The works hang in a tight row, like the pages of an accordion book.
