## Exhibitions

### *Textile Alchemy: The Art of Reiko Sudo & NUNO*

Sep 20, 2026 – Mar 7, 2027 · on view · Resnick Pavilion

The largest retrospective yet of the Japanese textile designer Reiko Sudō and her collective NUNO, with more than 100 limited-edition fabrics.

For more than 40 years Sudō and NUNO, often with independent artisans and workshops around Japan, have mixed handcraft with industrial technique, and leading architects have used their fabrics. Drawings, sketches, raw materials, tools, mock-ups and prototypes show how the textiles are made, and how the work keeps regional crafts and old production centers going while raising questions of sustainability.

### *Home of the Future, 1925–1985: Designing Domestic Utopias*

Group exhibition · Sep 27, 2026 – Mar 14, 2027 · on view · Resnick Pavilion

How the American home of tomorrow was imagined, packaged and sold between 1925 and 1985, from self-cleaning kitchens to plastic houses.

Architectural models, drawings, photographs, films and objects from sinks to television sets trace six decades of domestic utopias: push-button appliances, houses put together in a day, early desktop computers. The show also asks who was left out of these promised futures and who proposed radical alternatives. A companion show, The Kitchen and Its Discontents, runs alongside it.

May 3 – Nov 8, 2026 · on view · W.M. Keck Foundation Gallery, David Geffen Galleries

A single large 2023 painting by Christina Quarles, recently acquired by LACMA, opening a series of contemporary projects in a new gallery.

The Los Angeles painter is known for big canvases about living in a body shaped by identity and experience, and this one is filled with luminous, shape-shifting figures. The W.M. Keck Foundation Gallery is part of the museum’s education program, and Quarles leads family workshops in the room. Naima J. Keith and Diana Nawi curate.

A survey of the Los Angeles artist Eileen Cowin’s photographs and videos on romance, rivalry and daily life over more than 50 years.

Cowin blurs fact and fiction, borrowing from cinema, literature, poetry and painting to build photographic stories about the personal and the political. ### Pablo Picasso: *Portraits in Disguise*

Jun 12 – Dec 6, 2026 · on view · BCAM, Level 3

Picasso’s portraits of lovers, friends, rivals and himself, many hidden behind symbols, clothing or alter egos such as the harlequin.

In every style from Cubism to his late gestural work, Picasso often coded a sitter’s identity instead of painting a likeness: a profile drawn by negative space, a telling piece of clothing, a private archetype. He cast himself in recurring roles too, above all the harlequin, a figure of transformation, as in his Harlequin of 1923, a promised gift to the museum.

### *Danse Macabre: Death in Print from Durer to Dix*

Group exhibition · Jun 12 – Dec 6, 2026 · on view · BCAM, Level 3

Prints of the dance of death, from Renaissance woodcuts and engravings to the German artists who turned it on the First World War.

The danse macabre, in which lively skeletons remind the living how short life is, spread through woodcut illustrations from the 14th century and was taken up by printmakers across Europe. By the time of World War I, German Expressionist artists used its skulls, hourglasses and figures of Death to address war, revolution and industrialization.

### *Collecting Impressionism at LACMA*

Group exhibition · Dec 21, 2025 – Jan 3, 2027 · on view · Resnick Pavilion

How LACMA built its Impressionist holdings, from early American and California Impressionist purchases to Degas and Pissarro given by Hollywood collectors.

Late 19th-century French visual culture reached into prints, photography, decorative arts and fashion, yet American museums still tell the period through Impressionist painting. The show asks why, following the donors and artists who shaped LACMA’s collection and showing how changing taste, and gifts of art, helped the museum grow with the city. Among the works is Jean Béraud’s street scene of the Boulevard des Capucines.

### *The Kitchen and Its Discontents*

Group exhibition · Sep 27, 2026 – Mar 14, 2027 · on view · Resnick Pavilion

Two modernist kitchens from the collection, by Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky and by Charlotte Perriand and Le Corbusier, set against images of kitchen life.

Schütte-Lihotzky’s kitchen for the New Frankfurt social housing program (1926–30) and Perriand and Le Corbusier’s for the Unité d’Habitation in Marseille (1948–50) applied efficiency and modular design to ease women’s work at home. Photographs, prints and advertisements from the collection, among them a Cindy Sherman film still, show the messier reality. It runs alongside Home of the Future.

Feb 22 – Dec 1, 2026 · on view · Kendall Concourse

Twelve benches by the Los Angeles sign painter Alfonso Gonzalez Jr., carrying messages in place of bus-stop ads, along the museum’s Kendall Concourse.

A second-generation sign painter, Gonzalez works in rotulismo mexicano, the Mexican tradition of hand-painted signs now pushed aside by digital graphics and city clean-ups. His benches carry personal or political messages, some borrowing from LACMA’s history and collection, and visitors are free to sit on them.

Dec 21, 2025 – Dec 20, 2026 · on view

A year-long online artwork of 96 discarded beach sandals and shoes, photoscanned into live-rendered 3D forms for mobile browsers.

gerrard gathered 96 plastic sandals and shoes from beaches around the world and photoscanned them into gaussian splats, which stream and shift in real time rather than playing as video. Viewers can drag the objects and overlay them with oil slicks or ocean currents.

The work appears on LACMA’s homepage during four 24-hour events tied to the solstices and equinoxes, each linked to a different body of water, with one shoe surfacing per hour. It is presented by the museum’s Art + Technology Lab.
