The Schinkel Pavillon shows Helmar Lerski’s 1930s and 1940s photographs of hands and faces from Palestine and of Jewish soldiers, Gabriele Stötzer’s everyday objects from the 1990s, Andrzej Steinbach’s photographs and new work by Maria Lisogorskaya, alongside Xavier Robles de Medina and Maya Schweizer. The project asks how the split between “East” and “West” still shapes the present, touching on antisemitism and current geopolitics. The performance takes up La Haluca (“The Pioneer Woman”), a historical text by Luna Laura Papo Bohoreta (1891–1942), in which Jewish self-determination and feminist emancipation meet in one projected figure. Through selected biographies of people widely known today, it turns attention to Jewish history in the Yugoslav region, a history overwritten by the Shoah, socialist Yugoslavia’s memory politics and the 1990s wars. It is part of Projections Onto the East, a project by n.b.k. with the Schinkel Pavillon, conceived by Fabian Bechtle and Leon Kahane.
