## Exhibitions

### Maurizio Cattelan: *NIGHT*

Sep 10, 2026 – Mar 7, 2027 · on view

Maurizio Cattelan’s first major solo show in Germany, staged in the museum’s glass hall as the 2026 Preis der Nationalgalerie.

Known works such as Him (2001), Novecento (1997), La Rivoluzione Siamo Noi (2000) and Untitled (2003), after Günter Grass’s The Tin Drum, appear alongside new commissions. At the center is a new site-specific work that changes how Mies van der Rohe’s glass hall is used, turning it into a space for gathering and reflection.

The Preis der Nationalgalerie now takes the form of one artist’s show in the hall. Curated by Lisa Botti and Klaus Biesenbach with the artist.

### *Ruin and Rush*

Group exhibition · Apr 25, 2026 – Jan 3, 2027 · on view

Around 35 works from the collection on Berlin in the 1910s and 1920s, from Kirchner’s Potsdamer Platz to Lotte Laserstein.

Paintings and sculptures by Otto Dix, George Grosz, Hannah Höch, Jeanne Mammen, Käthe Kollwitz and others are arranged in three sections: the fast-growing city and its traffic and nightlife, the poverty most Berliners lived in, and the “new woman” and queer life. Dix’s 1925 portrait of the dancer Anita Berber is on loan from Stuttgart.

Clips from Metropolis and Berlin: Symphony of a Great City and recorded poems by Mascha Kaléko and Erich Kästner fill out the picture. Curated by Uta Caspary and Irina Hiebert Grun.

### Fujiko Nakaya: *Fog Sculpture in the Sculpture Garden of the Neue Nationalgalerie*

Apr 30 – Oct 25, 2026 · on view · Sculpture garden

Fujiko Nakaya’s fog sculpture returns for another season, filling the museum’s sculpture garden with clouds of water mist.

Every half hour, fog rises from different sides of the garden for eight minutes, drifting around the trees and the sculptures by Henri Laurens, Wolfgang Mattheuer and Alicja Kwade before dissolving upward. It can be watched through the 90-meter glass wall of the collection floor or entered from the garden.

Nakaya, born in Sapporo in 1933, made her first fog sculpture for Expo ’70 in Osaka.

### Christoph Schlingensief: *Deutschlandsuche ’99*

May 2, 2025 – Apr 25, 2027 · on view

A room on Christoph Schlingensief’s 1999 action Deutschland versenken, in which he symbolically “sank” Germany in the Hudson River.

Invited by MoMA PS1, Schlingensief knelt before the Statue of Liberty on 9 November 1999, a date tied to both the 1938 pogrom and the fall of the Wall, then threw an urn of symbolic German ashes and a suitcase of 99 everyday German objects into the river. The work, given to the museum by his estate, fills a room within the collection display Extreme Tension.

Curated by Klaus Biesenbach and Lisa Botti.

### Gerhard Richter: *100 Works for Berlin*

From Apr 1, 2023 · on view

A long-term loan of works by Gerhard Richter from his foundation, centered on his four Birkenau paintings of 2014.

The four large Birkenau canvases began as charcoal and paint copies of photographs taken at Auschwitz-Birkenau, which Richter then painted over in abstract layers until the images vanished; a four-part mirror hangs opposite. Also shown are Squatters’ House (1989), 4,900 Colors (2007), Strip (2013/2016) and a large group of overpainted photographs.

On loan from the Gerhard Richter Art Foundation; curated by Joachim Jäger and Maike Steinkamp.
