Work drawn from the letters and photographs left by an East German particle physicist, using the documents’ creases, handwriting and perforations as imagery.

Friebel builds the show on the estate of an East German particle physicist from the early years of a divided Germany. His letters and photographs follow a young man finding his intellectual and existential footing in a period of upheaval.

The physical traces of the documents, such as folds, handwriting and perforations, become image carriers and metaphors. The works move beyond the biographical to ask about freedom, arbitrariness and responsibility in a polarized political era.

Works by the sixteen nominees for the 22nd Haus am Kleistpark Art Prize, in painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, textiles and video.

The nominees’ show takes its theme from breaks and fissures, whether in subject matter, materials or technique. Fracture appears as fragmentation, interruption or displacement that changes how we perceive.

Cornelia Herfurtner is the award winner, with honorable mentions for Benjamin Kunath and Marei Loellmann. A five-member jury chose the nominees, including GfZK Leipzig director Franciska Zólyom.
