Rarely shown historical works by more than 40 artists, among them Vlassis Caniaris, Harun Farocki, Eduardo Paolozzi and Emine Sevgi Özdamar, sit alongside pieces made for the show. They take up exile, housing shortages, racism and exclusion, and also solidarity and community among the so-called guest workers and their children. Curated by Gürsoy Doğtaş and Patrizia Dander. The Berlin Museum shows a companion exhibition, Life Across, until Feb 7, 2027. Around 150 works cover painting, writing, photography, textiles, Super 8 film, performance and public actions. Jailed for a year by the GDR after organizing a petition in 1976, Stötzer went on to work in the literary and artistic underground and co-founded the women’s collective Künstlerinnengruppe Erfurt. Curated by Julia Grosse with Christopher Wierling. The show travels to Museum Abteiberg in Mönchengladbach in 2027. Rather than a standard retrospective, the show sets the main strands of Schlingensief’s work (he lived 1960–2010) next to one another to show how they fed each other, with the weight on doubt, testing and failure in his process rather than on finished pieces.
