Red-chalk portraits of Berlin Enlightenment figures such as Moses Mendelssohn and Friedrich Nicolai join prints on education, family and social order. Organized by the Kupferstichkabinett with the Akademie der Künste.

### *Portraits! Surprising Encounters from Botticelli to Lempicka*

Group exhibition · Oct 16, 2026 – Mar 14, 2027 · coming up

- Thu, Oct 15, 2026: Opening, 7 pm
- Sun, Oct 18, 2026: Public tour (booking recommended), 3–4 pm

About 90 portraits spanning six centuries, from Botticelli and Dürer to Lempicka, hung in unexpected pairs across eras and regions.

Drawn mainly from the Gemäldegalerie’s own portraits, with loans from the Alte and Neue Nationalgalerie, the Egyptian Museum and the Sculpture Collection, the pairings run through four sections: Renaissance types north and south of the Alps, elite self-display, family and friendship, and collectors and artists.

Anthonis Mor’s Margaret of Parma faces Moroni’s Don Gabriel de la Cueva; Sofonisba Anguissola’s mother meets Eugen Spiro’s wife. Curated by Sven Jakstat and Stephan Kemperdick.
