Jérémie Queyras, a French-German-Canadian painter, completed this official portrait of Angela Merkel in 2026. It is shown in the Bode-Museum’s historic setting, inviting a look at its artistic design and its link to contemporary history. After the display it will move to the Chancellery Gallery on the first floor of the Federal Chancellery, where every former chancellor is portrayed in a painting. S. Independence* From Jul 4, 2026 · on view · Münzkabinett Two small displays of coins and medals from the Münzkabinett tracing United States history, for the 250th anniversary of independence. The selection follows the country through founding, immigration and internal conflict, explains where the word dollar comes from, and includes a Revolutionary-era medal with George Washington’s portrait by Pierre Simon Benjamin Duvivier. It is part of the “We the People” program of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz. The permanent show pairs two objects: Donatello’s bronze putto of 1429, under forty centimetres high, and a 59-part plaster model of the Siena baptismal font, over five metres tall, cast by the Gipsformerei in 1876 and restored in 2023. A panoramic research display traces how the moulds were taken in Siena, how the model was made and used in Berlin, and the role of casts in 19th- and early 20th-century museums. It argues that a cast is an original in its own right. A publication by Schnell + Steiner accompanies it. For the first time the Bode-Museum is itself the subject of an exhibition. It traces how the building, one of Berlin’s best-known façades, has lived through two World Wars, the Nazi era and the division of Germany, and how its story is tied to the city’s. The show is organised in four sections: the collections, the building, research and the public. Restoration and technical studies of works are included. It is presented by the Skulpturensammlung, the Münzkabinett and the Zentralarchiv.
