### *Scandal! Hermione von Preuschen and the “Mors Imperator”*

Mar 22 – Nov 15, 2026 · on view

Hermione von Preuschen’s 1887 painting Mors Imperator, refused by the Berlin Academy, shown with the papers of the scandal that made her famous.

The painting shows Death as a skeleton ruler in a purple, ermine-trimmed cloak, knocking over a throne with one foot planted on a globe. The Academy jury rejected it in 1887 as a dig at the 90-year-old Emperor Wilhelm I, so von Preuschen hired rooms on Leipziger Straße and showed it herself to paying crowds.

Letters, photographs and publications trace the affair and her later work as a writer and world traveler. Curated by Birgit Verwiebe.

### *InterNationalgalerie 1: National Museum in Warsaw*

Jun 18, 2026 – Jan 17, 2027 · on view · Floor 1

The National Museum in Warsaw shows its collection under the title “Inventing Myths”, opening a new series of guest presentations by national galleries.

In its new InterNationalgalerie series the Alte Nationalgalerie gives a dedicated room to a different national gallery or museum from abroad over the coming years, a nod to a collection that was international from its opening in 1876. Warsaw goes first, with works including Jacek Malczewski’s The Polish Hamlet (1903) and Jan Matejko’s portrait of three of his children (1870).

### *Door to History*

From Jun 18, 2026 · on view · Floor 1

A historic room of the museum, redesigned for its 150th anniversary, showing traces of the building’s past from its founding to wartime destruction.

Once part of a sculpture hall of more than 300 square meters, the room keeps marks of the museum’s 1876 founding, the later Justi Cabinets and damage from World War II. A new cabinet beside it tells the collection’s history through three monumental works from the Nationalgalerie, and visitors can suggest topics for a “My National Gallery” module.

### *Across Epochs: Gursky, Lucas, Miró, Warhol and the Art of the Long 19th Century*

Group exhibition · Oct 22, 2026 – Feb 28, 2027 · coming up

Works of the 20th and 21st centuries placed among the museum’s 19th-century art on all three floors, for its 150th anniversary.

The Alte Nationalgalerie draws on the collection it shares with the Neue Nationalgalerie and Hamburger Bahnhof to set later works beside 19th-century ones at chosen spots throughout the building, inviting free association between periods. Works by Gursky, Lucas, Miró and Warhol appear alongside pieces by painters such as Bernhard Heisig and Gotthard Graubner.
